Overview & History

Department of Biochemistry started functioning in GMC, Thrissur since 1982. The commencement of first batch of MBBS with a student strength of 75 gradually upgraded through years and now with annual intake of 175 students from all over India.

Dr.  D. M.  Vasudevan was at Govt Medical College, Thrissur, from May 1989 to May 1996.He had won Dr. B.C.Roy Award for Eminent Medical Teacher, Fellow, National Academy of Medical Sciences, (FAMS), Award of Best Doctor in the Medical Education Services, Govt. of Kerala, KL Gupta Memorial Oration (Association of Clinical Biochemists of India).

Dr Vasudevan and Dr Sreekumari authored Text Book of Biochemistry, published by  Jaypee  Brothers, New Delhi( First Edition, 1995)  during their tenure at GMC Thrissur.

Started MD Biochemistry since 2013 and continuing the efforts for further upgrading. Other courses started at GMC Thrissur linked to Dept of Biochemistry are BDS,BSc Nursing and DMLT.

We have a well-equipped Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory for routine biochemical as well as special investigations with updated technologies for better patient care. Along with this we have a innovative research wing with a well-equipped Genetic Lab which was inaugurated in 2023.
