Overview & History
The department started functioning under the leadership of Dr. A Ramachandran in 1983 as a part of Govt. Medical College, Thrissur and the office of Police Surgeon was started along with. Since the beginning, the autopsy services to the Kerala State as a part of criminal investigation was offered, which is continuing uninterruptedly till date. The Postgraduate course in MD Forensic Medicine came into effect since 2010 with one seat and now we have 3 seats with the recognition of National Medical Commission, India for the same. Currently the Department is fully functional with the posts of 7 faculty members and 3 senior residents, supported by 9 junior residents and 14 other staff members.
The department is offering medicolegal services (medicolegal postmortem and other medicolegal examinations) to the Police, Law Enforcement Officers and Judicial Officersfrom the districts of Thrissur and Palakkad. Apart from these the department is sharing its expertise on various matters to the various agencies of Kerala Police and Central Investigation Agencies.The department is also conducting training sessions to the Judicial Officers from Kerala Judicial Academy, Assistant Public Prosecutors sent from the office of the DGProsecution and the Police Officers from the Kerala Police Academy. In addition, the Medical Undergraduate and Postgraduate students, the department is also offering classes to the Nursing students, MLT students and MSc. Forensic Science students in various aspects.
Now the department is well equipped with the sufficient infrastructure which is spreading over two separate blocks, the Office Division with faculty rooms and the Mortuary Block. The mortuary block is equipped with four autopsy tables and 16 freezing units for the preservation of the dead bodies. We are enhancing infrastructure and human resources to extend autopsy services to evening hours, with plans for round-the-clock availability in the future.

Achievements
- First rank in the KUHS MD Regular Examination (Forensic Medicine) conducted in January 2025 by Dr. Arathi S raj with First Class.
- Third rank in the KUHS MD Regular Examination (Forensic Medicine) conducted in January 2025 by Dr. Pratheesha Ravi with First Class.
Academic Activities
- The undergraduate academic activities include lectures, SGDs and formative assessment in periodical manner by various tools.
- The postgraduate academic activities include the hands-on training with cases, monthly theory examinations and weekly spot-tests as a part of formative assessment. There are regular seminars and case presentations with a frequency of twice in a week basis.
- Training sessions are being conducted for Judicial Officers from Kerala Judicial Academy, Assistant Public Prosecutors sent from the office of the DG Prosecution and the Police Officers from the Kerala Police Academy.
- Training classes are offered classes to the Nursing students, MLT students and MSc. Forensic Science students in various aspects.
Equipments
