Overview & History

Govt. Medical College Thrissur was started in 1982 in the Extension training centre for Garamasevak at Veterinary College Thrissur. With limited infrastructural facilities the 75 students of first batch MBBS had to pass through lot of stress and strain. By 1983 the preclinical and para clinical departments of the college was shifted to the present campus at Mulakunnathukavu which was known as  Sree Kerala Varma TB sanatorium of Cochin Dynasty. The initial clinical training was started in the district hospital Thrissur where the situation was very pathetic. So it was decided to transfer the Medical side of the hospital to the newly built hospital at Mulakunnathukavu. Meanwhile, the remaining patients of the Sanatorium were initially accommodated in the ESI Chest hospital which is nearby. So when the chest hospital was built in the early 80’s, there was a demand for accommodating the existing chronic patients of TB sanatorium.  So The TB and Chest Disease ward was commissioned initially during 1985. The first clinical department to be operational in the campus was Department of TB and Chest Diseases. Initially 3 wards were built along with the department rooms.

Prof. Dr. K. Nataraja Iyer, the doyen of pulmonology in Kerala was the first Head of the department and superintendent. Under his leadership, the department of TB and Chest diseases has grown with high acceleration to reach the present day state of the art department. The department was headed by many eminent professors whose contributions added heavily to the growth of this department.

Dr. V.Dinesa Prabhu, Dr. V. Achuthan, Dr. Kurian Thomas and Dr.Davis Paul C were the preceding HOD’s. Now the department is headed by Dr. Thomas George Under him, the department is pacing towards a new horizon.

In 2009, the government has renamed the Department of Pulmonary Medicine.

In 2010, the department admitted her first post graduate student and after 2 years, the PG seats have been increased to 3 and now the department has 4 MD pulmonary medicine seats.

From the days of sanatorium treatment, the department has grown up to the level at par with any other modern pulmonology department in the world, handling all sorts of critical illness and interventional pulmonology too.

Now the Department is equipped with basic bronchoscopy, Advanced bronchoscopy for interventional pulmonology including Rigid bronchoscopes, Thoracoscope, Endobronchial ultrasound with Radial and Linear probes, cryo endobronchial surgery system, Electro cautery and argon Plasma coagulation system for endobronchial surgery, trans thoracic ultrasound  for routine diagnosis and guided interventions. The Spirometry and Impulse Oscillometry  and Polysomnography are the other major investigations done in our department  in the department.

Tuberculosis is still a major public health problem and to diagnose and treat the most difficult cases we have a dedicated Tuberculosis ward. Under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Program  (NTEP), a single window facility for diagnosis and treatment of Tuberculosis is being functional with the department with a Medical officer, TB Health worker and Lab technicians. The facilities for Sputum smear for AFB, CBNAAT/ True NAAT, Conventional AFB culture, IGRA test for latent TB infection are also available and majority of the diagnosis and treatment of TB patients from Thrissur and adjoining districts are being undertaken by the department.

The department also is a nodal center for Multi Drug Resistant TB.  The nodal center caters the districts of Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki and Palakkad.

A model center for Pulmonary Rehabilitation is also awaiting inauguration now. This would train the medics and paramedics in pulmonary rehabilitation so that it could be implemented in the secondary care level.
