Overview & History
In March 2018, the Surgical Oncology Department at Government Medical College Thrissur was established under the leadership of Dr. Sharath Krishnan, who initially practiced surgical oncology within the General Surgery Department. During this time, patients in need of surgical intervention but unable to be accommodated in the General Surgery Department were often referred to higher-tier medical centers such as the Regional Cancer Centre in Trivandrum or the Malabar Cancer Centre.
In September 2022, Dr. Sharath Krishnan was granted a departmental transfer to initiate a dedicated Surgical Oncology Department, and Dr. Saheer Neduvanchery joined as a new recruit from the Public Service Commission (PSC) during the same month. As a result, the department now boasts the expertise of two surgical oncologists.

Achievements
- In 2018, Dr Saheer won the second Best paper presentationand poster presentation in the ONCOCON 2018, and in 2019, he acquired Intercollegiate MRCS degree from England

- Two major operating theaters
- well-equipped Intensive Care Unit with five beds
- 32-bed ward designed to cater to both male and female patients.
