Overview & History

The Pediatrics Department started functioning with other clinical departments on 22 October 1983 in the erstwhile District Hospital & Maternity Hospital buildings in Thrissur , popularly known as “the Town Hospital”. In 1987 , the departments started functioning in 300 bedded Medical College Chest Hospital at Mulamgunnathukavu .The clinical departments were completely shifted from District Hospital to the New Medical College Hospital Complex in Mulamgunnathukavu in December 2005.The NICU was established in 2006 , which has bloomed into a separate full fledged department of Neonatology in 2022 .The Department of Pediatrics caters to four districts of Thrissur , Ernakulam , Palakkad & Malappuram , including the coastel belts & tribal pockets .

The first batch of 74 undergraduate( MBBS ) students were admitted in April 1982, and passed out in May1987. Over the years the number of MBBS seats intake reached 150 . The CBME curriculum has been implemented from batch 2020 and the detailed syllabus and electives put up in the institutional website . The Post graduate (MD) courses started off in the Silver Jubilee year of 2007 with an intake of total 2 seats .The PG seat intake has increased to 9 seats per year as recognized by the NMC . The Department as part of the institution also proudly affiliates with the KUHS in providing facilities for pursuing PhD in Pediatrics.

The department aims at training the residents on giving holistic care to both OP and IP patients .Catering to the needs of sick children of neighbouring areas as Palakkad , Malappuram , Ponnani , the institution is the apex tertiary care centre of Thrissur and its outskirts too. The Department caters to an average OP of 180 cases per day.

It harbours the responsibility of the Regional Early Intervention Centre with rapid upgradation to state of the art facilities in care of disabled children and their rehabilitation .

The Hemophilia care under Ashadhara program is now running in full swing and has established a day care facility for the affected children and adolescents .

The Department has an intensive care unit with two consultants , 10 ventilator beds ,non invasive ventilary care ,dialysis and other intensive care advancements .

It runs speciality clinics in the areas of Childhood Diabetes under Mittayi scheme ,Pediatric Asthma clinic , Immunisation clinic , Pediatric Nephro clinic , Pediatric Endocrine & Growth disorders clinic and collaborates with Pediatric Surgery & Neonatology Departments. The adolescent clinic is in collaboration with Child Guidance Clinic of Psychiatry Department and Clinical Psychologist of REIC .

The Department is active in dissemination of up-to-date knowledge by conducting annual CMEs on relevant topics regularly .The Department is a resource of trainer of trainers in various topics accredited in Govt and IAP schemes . The Department conducts regular BLS & Pediatric ALS certificate courses by IAP accredited instructors.

The Department actively collaborates with the Govt .Nursing College , Thrissur in training the students of B.Sc , M.Sc and Post B.Sc nursing students.

The Department promotes research culture by training the residents on research methodology in collaboration with Dept of Community Medicine and also conducts journal clubs on a monthly basis. The papers and posters presented by residents and faculty wins prizes regularly in various level conferences and the faculty are regularly publishing articles in journals of international and national repute.

Department stands unique in the institution and across most Govt institutions across the State in having an updated antibiotic policy .

Quality initiatives and audits are becoming the regular norm in Department of Pediatrics contributing to patient safety and satisfaction .
