Overview & History
The Department of Community Medicine came into existence in 1983. Department of Community Medicine is one of the prime department of the institution which forms a major public health sector establishment in the central Kerala delivering comprehensive medical care for the three districts of Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram. Teaching & training of MBBS students & Interns as well as MD community medicine students are carried out in the Department. Dept. is involved in various public health activities like Immunization programmes, conduct of medical camps & health education classes, investigation of epidemics, campus sanitation activities, training of panchayath & municipal staff in various aspects of health. The Department of Community Medicine is running a Community Medicine Clinic for rabies prophylaxis and adult immunization at New Medical College Hospital. Block FHC Tholur & UFHC Parvattani are attached to Department of Community Medicine. In addition to this interns are sent for training to FHC Avanoor and CHC Erumapetty.

Teaching & Training Programme
- The MBBS students undergo teaching & training in the Dept. from 1st to 7th semesters. Their practical programme include 60 hrs posting during 1st semester, 6 weeks posting during 3rd semester, & 6 weeks posting during 7th semester. We conduct theory classes for all semesters except during 2nd semester.
- Classes are taken for nursing college students- both for BSc Nursing and MSc Nursing students.
- PG teaching programmes (Clinicosocial case presentations, Journal clubs, Seminars, Public Health Updates, Guest lectures, etc) are organized for Post graduate students in Community Medicine. The PGs of Microbiology department are also posted and are being trained in the Department.
