Overview
The Department of Anatomy was established in 1982 at Mannuthy Veterinary College campus with an intake of 75 students in the first batch. Dr. Swarnam L V was the first head of the department. She recollects now about how difficult it was to procure cadavers from other medical colleges and district hospital. The first batch of 75 students was taught with a single cadaver then. From the second MBBS batch onwards, the intake was raised to 100. That year itself the department was relocated to the current college campus, which was previously Kerala Varma TB Sanatorium. Dissection & Histology Practicals were conducted in the old block of anatomy. Lecture complex was situated near the Indian coffee house (now renovated as examination hall). Later in 2006, the intake of students was raised to 150 and in 2019 to 175. MD Anatomy course was started in 2011 with an annual intake of 2 candidates. The classes for the BDS course were started in 2015. The department got shifted to ground floor of the new academic block in April 2018.
We are fortunate to have alumni students of GMC, Thrissur in the current faculty list of Anatomy - Dr. Sathidevi V K (7 th batch), Dr. Rosemol Xaviour (21 st batch, 1 st PG batch), Dr. Arunkumar K G (1 st PG Batch) and Dr. Anjali Ravindran(7th PG Batch).
The major activities of the department are teaching, research, preparation of histology slides, museum specimens, and embalming of cadavers. The teaching activities include lectures, dissection, histology practicals for undergraduates (MBBS, BDS, 1st year and 3rd year BSc nursing, BCVT, DRRT, and DMLT, DOTAT) postgraduates (Anatomy PGs, other department PGs, Msc Nursing). Hence we are teaching more than 435 students yearly.
To enhance continuous learning, our department regularly conducts journal clubs, pedagogy sessions, PG presentations and interdepartmental cadaveric workshops. The pioneers from Obstetrics and Gynecology (Dr. V. P. Paily), Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Forensic Medicine and ENT approach our department for the cadaveric practice of difficult surgical approaches.
In the years between 2019 and 2023, our department conducted several CME programs (Spinacon in 2019 , Anatexpedia in 2020, Prosumus Mortui and Soft Embalming Techniques in 2023). The department of Anatomy promotes research activities, presentations and publications from faculty and post graduates. Also, in the same term, there were many publications in indexed journals from our department.
The department of Anatomy accepts bodies from voluntary donors and unclaimed bodies from our hospitals. The body donation awareness campaigns are conducted by our faculty, in cooperation with voluntary organizations in different parts of Thrissur and nearby districts to encourage body donation from the public. Currently, there are 2503 registered donors. On 16th September 2023 we conducted a public function to honour the body donors (Body Donors’ Meet 2023).
The embalming is done for study purposes and transportation to other parts of the country and abroad. The unclaimed bodies exceeding our requirement are provided to other medical colleges in concordance with the Kerala Anatomy act.
Kerala Anatomy Act
The histology slides are prepared in our lab at frequent intervals. After completion of dissection of cadavers, the remains are buried in our burial ground to procure bones for teaching.
In the future, we aim to conduct more interdepartmental academic activities for collaborative learning. Our vision is to start clinical embryology, virtual dissection and plastination units as department resources.
Achievements
