Overview & History

Neonatal ICU in Government Medical College (GMC), Thrissur is a referral tertiary care unit which caters to the medical needs of the neonates from the districts of Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam and Malappuram. These include patients from the coastal belts of Kodungallur, Chavakkad and Ponnani and from tribal areas, such as Attapadi and Valparai. It is a designated SNCU, with neonates being referred in from peripheral Govemment hospitals in the areas mentioned above including Kottathara Tribal Speciality Hospital, Attapadi.

The government of Kerala has rightly taken an initiative in August 2018 by establishing a new Neonatology Department in GMC Thrissur and sanctioning five regular faculty positions (one Associate Professor, two Assistant Professors and two Senior Residents) to improve the neonatal care in this region. This decision was a great relief to the GMC, Thrissur as this helped in improving the quality of neonatal care.

A new neonatal ICU in 3000 sq. feet area was developed in GMC, Thrissur with the financial assistance from National Health Mission (NHM) along with local funds, and started functioning from April 2019. Currently, our neonatology unit is a 56-bedded ICU, with advanced Level III care facilities such as conventional ventilation (13 ventilators), high frequency ventilation, therapeutic hypothermia care, point of care ultrasonography, extreme preterm care, total parenteral nutrition and complex neonatal surgical care.

For further infrastructure development of the unit, NHM has sanctioned Rs 35 lakhs in project implementation plan of 2020-21 and work completed. The Department has got approval and financial aid (Rs 70 lakhs) for the establishment of a comprehensive lactational management centre (CLMC), and inauguration of the breast milk bank and CLMC was done in May 2023. Another financial aid of Rs One crore for setting up MNICU has been approved in 2023-2024 financial year and DPR is being submitted.
