Overview & History

The department of Microbiology in GMC Thrissur was established in 1983. The Department catered to academic activities like teaching  MBBS students and laboratory work.

Later on several courses like BDS, B Sc Nursing, DMLT, were added to the list. In addition, Microbiology classes are conducted for BCVT and DOTAT students regularly. Laboratory work has been extended to 24 hours a day. Additional Laboratories were added like VRDL (Viral Research Diagnostic Laboratory), ICTC HIV testing laboratory, VLTL (Viral load testing laboratory) for HIV, HBV and HCV, NVHSP ( National Viral Hepatitis Surveillance and Program) Laboratory. Molecular testing for Tuberculosis (both pulmonary and Extra pulmonary) were started using TRUNAT and CBNAT machines. IGRA (Interferon Gamma Release Assay) is also started for testing children. Hospital infection surveillance and control activities are routinely done.
