Overview & History
Welcome to Department of Nephrology, Govt. Medical College Thrissur.Our department is dedicated to fostering excellence in field of Nephrology. Our department is the centre for tertiary care for patients from Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram districts. The Hemodialysis unit was set up by the persistent efforts of Dr.Vinu Thomas in the year 2003. The department which started functioning with 4 hemodialysis machines has presently expanded to 21 machines and CRRT machine.

Academic Activities
Diploma in dialysis technology course for dialysis technicians has been started in 2023 with an intake of 10 students yearly. In addition to these regular academic sessions are conducted for junior residents from General Medicine. Teaching programmes are also conducted for junior residents from Departments of Physiology, Biochemistry and for undergraduate MBBS students.
Through our diverse range of activities, we strive to provide our students with a well-rounded and enriching learning experience. From hands-on projects to engaging seminars, we offer numerous opportunities for students to explore and expand their knowledge.
Public awareness programes about kidney diseases and CMEs and quiz competition for Junior Residents are conducted during World Kidney Day.
We believe in the power of collaboration and encourage interdisciplinary interactions. Our department actively collaborates with other departments in clinical and researchscenarios to create a vibrant learning environment.
Facilities & Services

Hemodialysis - 21 hemodialysis machines. Separate hemodialysis machines installed in medicine ICU including isolated dialysis machine for covid positive patients .we also offer hemodialysis for HCV and HBV positive patients through a separate unit with 4 dedicated machines. In addition to hemodialysis, procedure like SLED, Plasmapheresis etc are also performed. We offer regular maintenecehemodialysis to around 100 patients.

CRRT- CRRT machine with provision for same available in medical ICU.

Peritoneal dialysis - Acute and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis performed in peritoneal dialysis unit. Currently we have around 40 CAPD patients on follow up.

Procedures conducted - ultrasound guided renal biopsy, temporary and tunnelled catheter insertion, acute peritoneal dialysis, continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis
