Overview & History
This hospital is mainly focused on the development of Medical College Chest Hospital to a TERTIARY CANCER CARE CENTER for central Kerala by Upgrading the Department of Radiotherapy &Oncology, , Surgical Oncology, and improving ChemotherapyDay Care blocks, OP block, IP wards and adding palliative care and community oncology services, The very objective of these developments is aiming at making Medical College Chest Hospital a comprehensive cancer treatment and research center for Central Kerala.
Department of Radiotherapy started functioning in Govt Medical College Thrissur in 1989 with Out-Patient facility and In-Patient Facility with 20 beds in Male ward & 10 in female ward. Now the department has 60 beds inpatient capacity.It is now the major Department in Medical College Chest Hospital(MCCH).The MCCH is in transformation to the Tertiary Cancer Care Centre,which was declared by the Honourable Finance Minister of Kerala Government in 2017-18 State Budget.
Approximate 4000 new cancer cases were registered in every year in Oncology Department. Of these, Breast forms the most common malignancy in females and followed by Gynaecological cancers. In males most common malignancy is Digestive organs followed by Respiratory system.
The patients attending the Radiotherapy & Oncology Department are mainly from the three districts of central Kerala, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram.

Radiotherapy facilities:-
- Linear Accelerator
The Department is equipped with the state of art Linear Accelerator (LINAC-Varian made) started in 2021 which having two photon energies, five electron energies and with Multi Leaf Collimators. The treatment planning is performed using 3- Dimensional Computerized Treatment Planning System (TPS). The LINAC is capable of delivering the radiation treatment in various modalities like Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), 3-D Conformal Radiotherapy (3D-CRT), Total Skin Electron Therapy (TSET), Total Body Irradiation (TBI) and Conventional Radiotherapy.An inbuilt Cone Beam CT and Electronic Portal Imaging Device (EPID) for real time verification of the target volume and normal structures is available with LINAC. An average of 50-55 patients per day is undergoing Radiation treatment in LINAC. - CT Simulator
There is a CT Simulator (Discovery RT-Wipro GE made) which has the capability for CT/MRI/ PET fusion. The volumetric images from the CT Simulator can be exported to the Planning System of LINAC, HDR Brachytherapy unit and new TelecobaltBhabhatron II TAW Machine. - HDR Brachytherapy
The Department has a HDR Brachytherapy (Elekta) treatment unit with Iridium-192 radioactive source started in 2009 which is delivering Radiation treatment on an average of 12 patients per week. - Two Telecobalt Machines
The Department is also equipped with a two functional Telecobalt treatment units. One Treatment unit (Theratron Elite-80, Team Best made) has started in 2004 andtreating an average of 60 patients per day and the new Bhabhatron II TAW treatment unit (Panacea made,)has started the treatment in December 2022 and treating an average of 40 patients per day at present.
Radiation Beam generation data and the output of the treatment units are measured and verified with standard PTW Dosimetryequipments. The accuracy of the Radiation Beam is verified with sophisticated quality assurance devices periodically and radiation safety survey for the Radiation Facility is carried out with standard survey meters. - Chemotherapy facilities
The Day Care ward started functioning with 15 beds in 2004.Morethan100patients areundergoingchemotherapydailyonalldaysinaweek.The day care Chemotherapy ward starts functioning over 24 hours. The department has 45 beds dedicated for Day-care Chemotherapy. - Palliative Care ward
The department has 30 beds in ward V for palliative care - Community Oncology
Community awareness and early cancer detection programmes are essential for reducing cancer incidents in the community. Department of Radiotherapy & Oncology collaborates with other oncology related departments in MCH for providing comprehensive community oncology to the public in Thrissur and Palakkad districts. - Multidisciplinary Tumor Board (MDTB)
The institution is having multidisciplinary Tumor Boards (MDTBs) in various sub specialties in Oncology. The MDTBs are forums for discussing patient management for better individualised cancer care. We have the following MDTB clinics:- Surgical Oncology Tumor Board

- ICMR - HBCR
Hospital Based Cancer Registry started functioning in 2014. Now ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) has sanctioned Hospital Based Cancer Registry (HBCR) research project for Radiotherapy department in Government Medical College, Thrissur from 2017 onwards. With this project we are doing a good HBCR (Hospital Based Cancer Registry).
